The Federal Government says it has secured $100m from the European Union through the State Employment and Expenditure for Result project initiative to create job opportunities and tackle youth restiveness in the Niger Delta.
The Supervising Minister of the National Planning Commission, Bashir Yuguda, said this at a retreat organised for commissioners, permanent secretaries and other stakeholders of the SEEFOR project.
The retreat, which has the theme, ‘Improving governance and tackling unemployment in the Niger Delta – priorities and strategies,’ was held at the Obudu Cattle Ranch in Obanliku Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The minister lauded the EU community for the interest put on the project.
He said the fund would be judiciously channelled into the purpose for which it was meant.
Yuguda, who is also the Deputy Chairman of the National Planning Commission, explained that the SEEFOR project was designed to enhance a better understanding for effective implementation in the beneficiary states namely; Bayelsa, Rivers, Edo and Delta.
He said that if well harnessed, the project would enhance opportunities to create more jobs, enable access to socio-economic services and improve public expenditure management in the beneficiary states.
The minster stated that statistics of unemployment within the country showed that the Niger Delta had the highest rate of unemployment.
“That is driven by demographic, educational and economic factors. It is in realisation of this that the project was introduced by the present administration,” he said.
Yuguda stressed that the Federal Government was committed to working closely with states in promoting partnership to address the hydra-headed issues of unemployment as well as institutionalising the superstructure of public financial management reforms at the sub-national levels.
According to him, through the initiation of youth enterprise with innovation in Nigeria (You-Win) project launched in 2011, 110,000 youths had been provided with jobs.
In 2012, he continued, through labour intensive public works and women/youth empowerment projects, 185,000 women got jobs.
Yuguda maintained that 704 youths were currently being trained locally and abroad to acquire skills in agriculture, petroleum engineering, commerce, tourism and maritime studies.
